Juneteenth in SoCal

Juneteenth (June 19) commemorates the day in 1865 when news of emancipation finally reached the last enslaved people in Galveston, Texas. It's a day of remembrance, but also a celebration of Black joy, creativity, and community. Here's how Happy Girl Club is choosing to celebrate with intention throughout Southern California this year.

See Black Art: GIANTS at MCASD
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla is the only West Coast venue for GIANTS: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys, on view through August 9, 2026. The exhibition features 130+ works by nearly 40 Black artists, including Basquiat, Kehinde Wiley, Amy Sherald, Gordon Parks, and a monumental 25-foot Mickalene Thomas piece debuting in San Diego. 

Also worth a visit: the California African American Museum in LA (free admission) and the WorldBeat Cultural Center in Balboa Park.

Show Up: Festivals & Events (June 19–21)

Juneteenth falls on a Friday in 2026, which means a full weekend of celebrations. These events are family-friendly and a great way to celebrate in community.

Kinfolk Fest at Waterfront Park (Saturday, June 20, 11am–6pm) Hosted by SD Melanin, Kinfolk Fest is billed as San Diego's largest Juneteenth celebration - think of it as the Black family reunion everyone's invited to. Expect DJs, live R&B, hip-hop, Afrobeats and diaspora performances, more than 100 Black-owned business vendors, food, cocktails, art activations, and games. This year it's expanded into a whole week of events. 

Juneteenth at the Beach (Saturday, June 20, 9am–4pm)
Celebrate Juneteenth by the beach at Paddle for Peace’s 6th Annual Juneteenth Summer Kickoff BBQ. This community-centered event honors Black joy, culture, and freedom with delicious BBQ, music, beach games, and oceanfront vibes. Whether you're looking to connect, dance, surf, or simply enjoy a day of celebration, this annual gathering is a welcoming way to commemorate Juneteenth and kick off the summer season.

Cooper Family Foundation Juneteenth at Memorial Park A longstanding community festival with two stages, a history wall, a kids' zone, food, and vendors. One of San Diego's most established Juneteenth traditions.

Louisiana Purchase Juneteenth Block Party in North Park (June 19, noon–6pm)
The Black-owned restaurant Louisiana Purchase teams up with Black San Diego, High Definition Entertainment, and the Harvey Family Foundation for a block party at Louisiana and Wightman Streets featuring local Black-owned businesses, a slam poetry showcase, and live music.

NAACP Juneteenth Multicultural Celebration in Downtown Oceanside
(Saturday, June 20, 10am - 5pm)

The North San Diego County NAACP hosts this free, day-long celebration with a vendor marketplace, food, health and informational booths, a Youth Zone with games and crafts, and performances all day.

San Diego Public Library & Central Library Jubilee
The Central Library kicks things off with a Juneteenth Jubilee on June 14 (noon–5 p.m.) featuring live music, poetry, and special guests, with additional programming at branches across the county.

Leimert Park Juneteenth Celebration (June 19) Leimert Park Village is the heartbeat of Black LA, and its Juneteenth festival is one of the biggest in SoCal! Filled with drum circles, jazz and DJ sets, line dancing, poetry, wellness programming, and rows of Black-owned vendors, this free event is always a vibe that underlines the Black culture and joy that coming with being in community.

Juneteenth Freedom Ride at Leimert Park (June 19, 8 am) A community bike ride with 9-, 14-, and 19-mile routes starting and ending in Leimert Park, celebrating the Black cycling culture. 

Juneteenth at the Hollywood Bowl Chance the Rapper is headlining this year's Juneteenth celebration at the Bowl with the 10-year anniversary of Coloring Book leading the setlist!

Make It Last

The best support is consistent: become a year-round regular at Black-owned businesses, donate or volunteer with groups like the local NAACP or SD Melanin, and keep showing up in February, June, and every month in between.

Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom. Honor it with joy, presence, and a commitment that doesn't end when the weekend does. ✊🏿✊🏾✊🏽
